Most in U.S. Say It’s Essential That Immigrants Learn English

This is a survey conducted in August of 2013 that supplements my last post about Henry Ford’s melting pot. The survey suggests that less than 20% of Americans believe that it is essential for Americans to learn a second language. In a practical sense, it’s not truly essential for success in this country. But this is most likely perpetuated by the fact that over 70% believe that it is essential for immigrants to learn English. It’s clear that this is a belief that has carried through all of the last century, but why is it so prevalent now even in the face of rising support for pro-immigration legislation?
